Good Enough vs. Deeply Regulated: Lessons from My New Horse, Asher
The Lesson That Found Me
Recently, I welcomed a new horse named Asher into my life. 🐴
Like all new beginnings, it’s been filled with both beauty and challenge — moments of deep connection, and others that have asked for more patience and presence than I thought I had.
Asher came from a loving home, but when he arrived here, he struggled to adjust. He missed his old herd, his sense of belonging, and the rhythm of the place he’d known. His nervous system was on alert, and I could feel it in every part of him — the tension in his body, the watchfulness in his eyes, the uncertainty in his breath.
As we began our work together, helping him regulate and find safety again, something within me started to shift too.
The Mirror of the Horses
One of the things I love most about my relationship with horses is how honestly they mirror what’s within us. They don’t judge — they simply reflect.
As I guided Asher toward calm, I started to notice my own subtle ways of staying slightly unregulated. I realized that I, too, often live my life at a low hum of anxiety — just enough to keep going, but not enough to feel truly grounded.
I’d tell myself, “It’s fine. I’m managing. I’m not falling apart, so it’s okay.”
But what I was really saying was, “Good enough is good enough.”
Watching Asher unwind, breathe deeper, and find peace reminded me that managing isn’t the same as thriving.
And being “fine” isn’t the same as being fully present.
The Power of Regulation
When a horse feels safe, their entire being softens — their eyes, their muscles, their breath. That moment when their nervous system releases, and you feel their energy settle, is one of the most sacred experiences I know.
It’s the same for us.
When we let ourselves feel safe enough to relax, to truly exhale, we reconnect with our natural state of calm.
It’s in that space that healing, clarity, and connection begin to unfold.
The Invitation
Asher’s journey has reminded me that peace isn’t something we achieve — it’s something we allow.
And often, the first step is noticing where we’ve been living “just good enough.”
So today, I invite you to pause and reflect:
🌿 Where in your life are you holding a quiet tension that you’ve learned to live with?
🌿 What would it feel like to truly unwind and find deeper regulation — in your body, your breath, and your being?
The horses continue to be my greatest teachers in this.
They remind me daily that we can’t think our way into calm — we have to feel our way there.
